Dahlia planting guide

 

Open your package carefully some of the tubers may already have sprouts.

1. If your weather is not ideal for planting. Keep your tubers in cool and dark environment until its time to plant outside .

2. Plant when soil temperature is above 60° and the danger of frost has passed. Dahlias prefer full sun  and good drainage.

3. Dig 6" deep hole, place the tubers and stake to support the dahlias. DO NOT water your dahlias until the growth is 3-4" above the soil. Watering often might cause tuber rot.

4. We also add handful of alfalfa pellets worked into the soil before planting the tuber to give added nitrogen for growth.

5. Pinch your dahlias when it is 12" tall. Make sure to remove spent blooms to encourage prolific plant.

6. Sanitize your tools between plants to avoid spreading diseases between plants. According to ADS these are the disinfecting Options ; I use bleach / Dawn dish soap method
